7 DEI Profiles @ Work

All rights reserved Dr. Tina Opie

Diversity, equity and inclusion is a ubiquitous phrase and the terms are often used interchangeably. But, what does "DEI" really mean? In simplified terms:

Diversity is about numeric representation. It's a frequency count. How many people from different demographic groups are in our organization? Inclusion is about decision-making. Whose voices are heard? Who is included in the decision-making processes that determine how we do things around here? Do people feel included in the organization? Equity is the ratio of inputs to outputs. It's about justice. If people put in the same inputs (e.g., number of work hours, effort, performance, quality, etc.) will they get the same outputs (e.g., pay, promotion, recognition, job opportunities)?

As you have probably seen at work, in your neighborhoods, and, in the news, people have vastly different reactions to DEI. Some people are pushing for DEI, others are blocking DEI. Here, I've provided 7 DEI profiles to describe common reactions to DEI at work.

Will you do me a favor? Will you commit to reading the 7 DEI Profiles and commenting below with your reaction to the profiles?

Here are two ideas on things that you can share:

  1. Do you agree or disagree with these profiles? What would you change or add?

  2. Do you recognize any of your co-workers in the profiles? Which ones?

I welcome your input and look forward to engaging with you about your comments.
